Unusual catalytic activities of nucleic acids: primordial relevance?

Two catalytic activities of enzymes made of RNA and RNA-like polymers will be described, and their possible primordial relevance explored. One activity deals with the utilization of a ubiquitous cofactor found in contemporary metabolism, heme. The other deals with the utilization of light energy to effect efficient lesion repair within photo-damaged nucleic acids.
